Avoiding Alien Investigations
Nearly everything we know about LGBTQQI folks comes from White, middle-class gay men and lesbian women living in the United States.
Our knowledge of transgender, questioning, and intersexed folks is limited.
Our knowledge of children is limited.
The research that has been done is often from not LGBTQQI individuals who approach the field from an anthropological approach. We need more inside data.

Homophobia and transphobia
These are only likely to end when LGBTQQI individuals are assimilated and accepted into the broader realms of society.
Paradoxically, once this occurs, it may be difficult to continue research, which could lead to some oversights of needs.
Transphobia in the gay community:

Intersectionality
No one ever experiences themselves as a single category. We cannot understand our lives as simple male or female, straight or queer, black or white, poor or wealthy. All of these factors are put together into an “additive model” of identity.
We need to focus less on the “axis” of identity in isolation and more on exploring the complex and intersecting ways in which identity categories simultaneously produce experiences (p. 245).

Privilege
Privilege and disadvantage are intimately related; the former is normally productive of the latter.
In a male-dominated society, men benefit from the assumption that masculinity is assumed to be best.
Traditional roles are often reinforced through such assumptions, even with couples are attempting to change this. If a woman earns less, she should cut back on her hours to help with childcare…

Social Psychology
Measure one group against another
Helps with studying homophobia and heterosexism.
Also helps to explore attitudes within the LGBTQ communities
I would like to see more experiments done like this high school project:

Developmental Psychology
Very important for child custody cases
Fostering and adoption will also be based on showing how well children are raised within LGBTQQI families.
There are important political assumptions here, and we need more “affirmative” research that is not based on heteronormative assumptions.
Gender identity will likely be at the forefront of this. We have already learned about how the third gender marker has affected people in India. The Hijras have existed in India for 4,000 years, but they continue to face significant discrimination and prejudice. Is this what will happen by eliminating gender markers in other countries?

Clinical and counseling psychology
We know every little about LGBTQQI people’s experiences within counseling.
However, we do know that heternormativity is still dominant in counseling. There are been attempts to change this, but it will take time.

Educational psychology
School Psychology is an important area for LGBTQQI studies.
We need to understand experiences of younger children as well as students in higher education.
Inclusiveness in education will become a focus in the coming years.

Health Psychology
We have done well focusing on HIV, but we know less about other areas
Pregnancy loss among lesbian and bisexual women is only just being explored.
How does gaining or losing male-privilege affect transfolks? Are there different developmental needs regarding LGBTQQI and their health? We just don’t know.

Family Studies
We are making progress from the dark days where simply being LGBTQQI made you a bad parent (or even an abusive parent).
We need to continue working on marriage issues and studying the effects of adding marriage laws.

Psychology of Work and Leisure
We have done some work in prejudice and finding employment, but we know very little about the experiences of LGBTQQI employees.
We know even less about what LGBTQQI people do or how well they function in their work-roles.
Even leisure activities are not well understood, and exploring these areas could help enrich the lives of the community.

Psychology and the media
Much of the focus has been on violence
There is a focus on LBTQ and limited positive media for the community.
We need to analyze the rhetoric of both negative and positive (or sympathetic) media representations.

Assignment 6: Social justice paper
This paper is meant to function as a final exam. In the literature review, please cite any sources that will be useful for your workshop. But the workshop itself can mostly build from this class or involve other things you would want to address.
The only unique part of the workshop will be how you assess if people are reaching the designed level of competence. Here are some resources to help:
